Why is RES potential assessment important?
Accurate knowledge of existing RES and waste heat potentials is a basic prerequisite for reliable planning of the transformation (de-carbonisation) of DHC systems and sustainable investment decisions. Furthermore, main objectives of mapping waste heat and renewable energy sources (RES) and preparing cadastres are to raise awareness of the energy potential of waste heat and RES, stimulate investment in their utilisation and support the development of heat supply concepts for communities and energy providers.
The cadastres also serve as a tool for designing national, regional, or local strategies for RES and waste heat utilisation and for tracking progress in this field. Necessary data can be derived from different sources — either directly from companies, calculated from publicly available emissions data for officially approved and monitored facilities (as published by relevant national or regional authorities), or estimated based on literature and other public datasets.
